Eindexamens en diploma uitreikingen

De afgelopen weken stonden in het teken van de eindexamens en afstudeerprojecten. De studenten Ambachtelijk Schoenmaken werden beoordeeld op vrijdag 11 juni. Van de negen studenten slaagden er uiteindelijk vijf. Twee studenten ontvingen een deelcertificaat voor bovenwerk. Een week later volgde de beoordeling van de eenjarige opleiding Industrial Footwear Design. Hier slaagden zeven van de negen studenten, waarvan twee cum laude. De diploma uitreikingen van beide opleidingen vonden afzonderlijk van elkaar plaats in de ontvangstzaal van het Nederlands Leder en Schoenen Museum. Aansluitend was er voor beide groepen gelegenheid om de mini-expositie met afstudeerwerk in het museum te bekijken.

This week I want to introduce you to two sisters who originally hailed from California but who now ply their trade in New York.

Satu and Celeste Greenberg have been inspired by vintage jewelry since they were in high school. They would frequent the many local vintage stores and rework the jewelry into modern and versatile pieces. When the sisters eventually moved to New York city and started working for some of the world’s premiere fashion magazines, and word began to spread of their impressive vintage collection and designers, creative directors and editors began approaching them about using their archive as a source for their own design inspiration.

First footwear collection

However, their vision did not end with jewelry as you may well have expected. This spring the duo launched their first footwear collection. These shoes although edgy, are full of feminine details and certainly have elements of the jewelry Satu and Celeste are famous for.

Three Things on Thursday - Rakish Heels

For those who know me, also know that you do not wear shoes that are just your average fare.

They will always stand out in one way or another. Sometimes it is the very loud colour, think yellow, visible from across the street, sometimes it is just the little details that you only notice only when you look close up. Rakish heels caught my attention because they do indeed stand out, sometimes in fine details but always with a Rakish heel.

Rakish Heels was launched in 2008 in Las Vegas but is actually based in North London.

Quirky and charming

Lona Jones is the creative designer behind these quirky, charming and at times Victorian inspired shoes. Rakish is an old English word meaning bold, fashionable, with attitude, different from the norm. The shoes made by Lona Jones, especially the heels, are very Rakish, hence the name.

Rakish heels do not necessarily conform to a fashion trend.

The iconic patterns of Missoni are hard to miss when you spot them.

Missoni knitwear is known for its multitude of patterns such as stripes, geometrics and abstract florals, and best known the zig-zag pattern in a kaleidoscope of colours.
Missoni is a fashion house that was established in 1953. The company since then has diversified into producing a variety of luxury goods and even opening up lifestyle hotels in Scotland, Kuwait and Brazil among other countries.
Recently they collaborated with Target (compare this to the Hema) in the United States, much like H&M does with fashion designers. The Missoni goods were sold out within hours and caused the Target online ordering service to crash several times. To say that the US is in love with this fashion house is an understatement.

De geboorte van een schoen

Mijn 16-jarige zoon staat voor misschien wel de moeilijkste beslissing in zijn prille leventje: de keuze van een vervolgopleiding. Was het nou maar duidelijk waar zijn interesses lagen, of zijn vaardigheden, maar zo eenvoudig is het helaas niet. Sommige kinderen weten al op heel jeugdige leeftijd dat ze kleuterjuf, brandweerman of kok willen worden.

Zo niet onze oudste, die werkelijk geen idee heeft. En neemt het hem eens kwalijk: 16 is ook eigenlijk geen leeftijd om te overzien wat je de rest van je leven wilt doen om in je levensonderhoud te voorzien.

René van den Berg

Wie zulke twijfels eigenlijk nooit heeft gehad is René van den Berg. Hij had nog maar amper leren lezen en schrijven of hij liet via een tekening al weten dat hij later schoenmaker wilde worden. Net als zijn vader, zijn opa én zijn overgrootvader! Hoe cool is dat? Zo’n prachtig oud ambacht dat vroeger al van vader op zoon overging, maar dan vaak tegen wil en dank. Want wie als dubbeltje geboren was, werd nooit een kwartje. Dat cliché gaat echter niet op voor René; die is zijn gewicht in goud waard.
