Since starting to write for MFS I have come across many, to me, new terms for certain shoes. There was the monk shoe, the ghillie ties, and smoking slippers to name just a few. Well for the past few weeks I have been coming across these very creepy shoes called creepers. At least that is what they are called now. The first word was dropped a while back.

Crepe-soled shoes
Creepers or brothel creepers found their beginnings in the years following World war II, as soldiers based in the deserts in North Africa wore suede boots with hardwearing crepe soles because of the climate and environment.
Having left the army, many of these ex-soldiers found their way to the nightspots of London wearing the same crepe-soled shoes and these became known as "brothel creepers". Although initially a men's shoe they are now very much a uni-sex shoe.
The creeper is a very British shoe. Whenever there has been a resurgence in it's popularity it has been in England. The brothel creeper regained popularity in the early 1970s and has since been adopted by subcultures such as ska, punk, new wavers, and goth to name just a few. Since all things 70s have returned, unfortunately so have these shoes.
Should you get a kick out of these, Underground UK as well as ASOS have a good selection of creepers including round round toe, pointy toe double and even triple thick soles.
Personally, I think that they are "een blok aan je been".

Helena Siebert uit Vancouver, Canada, is een myfavouriteshoes fan van het eerste uur. Niet alleen is zij een fan van John Fluevog schoenen, zij houdt van alle schoenen met een twist. Het leek haar leuk om schrijvend haar passie voor schoenen met ons te delen. Het kan haar lekker niks schelen dat haar man, zoals de meeste mannen, ook niet zo van wedges houdt. Ze koopt en draagt ze met plezier. Haar Nederlands is een beetje te roestig, dus schrijft zij in het Engels. |
